"Non-self-expression" on social media refers to the phenomenon that individuals, influenced by social media, passively create personas to attract attention. This phenomenon leads individuals to become addicted to the virtual world, engaging in a repetitive cycle of passive 'performance,' and gradually losing the ability to communicate with others in real life.
The purpose of "Swayed Flower" is to expose this phenomenon and provoke reflection. The work employs symbolic objects such as a wind vane, vase, tags, and bubbles, and through a series of interactive behaviors, it amplifies the perception of passive "performance." It allows the audience to immersively experience the fragmentation of social media and the state of “non-self expression” during the interaction, while also revealing the dialectical relationship between individual behavior and social media.
Inspiration
My inspiration comes from observing the behavior of my friends. During gatherings and trips, everyone is often distracted by their phones and social media, rather than fully engaging in real-life interactions. We often share less authentic moments of happiness on social platforms, focusing more on taking photos, editing them, and seeking approval, rather than truly savoring the present moment. It is common to see people immersing themselves in social media, struggling to balance their lives between the real and virtual worlds. The differences in their behavior between reality and the virtual realm have piqued my curiosity: What is this state? Why does it happen?
Research has found that they might be falling into a state known as FOMO.
Installation
As the viewer approaches and stands in front of the vase, the LED lights are illuminated, and they begin to "transfuse" into the vase, and the wind vane starts to spin aimlessly.
After exhaling into the microphone, the vase will make a sound of "charging complete", and a large group of "bubbles" flood into the vase, playing popular TikTok videos.
