Life Box

2024
Immersive Interactive Installation
Arduino, Pulse Sensor, LED Light, Speaker, Push Button, Mirror Acrylic

In an era where life is fast-paced and hyper-connected, people rarely pause to experience the rhythm of their own existence. Immersed in external distractions, they lose touch with the intimate dialogue between body and soul.

This interactive installation invites participants to step into an enclosed black box, isolating themselves from the outside world and immersing in the pulse of life and the transition to death. The experience unfolds in two stages:

Living Mode – A pulse sensor captures the participant's heartbeat, translating it into breathing, flickering lights that move in sync with their pulse, visualizing the vibrancy of life.

Death Mode – After approximately 40 beats, the glowing pulse disperses into countless tiny lights, like fireflies or distant stars. This transition symbolizes death not as an end, but as a return to nature—serene, poetic, and eternal.

Using the interplay of light, darkness, and rhythm, this piece seeks to evoke contemplation on the essence of life and death, encouraging the audience to embrace both the intensity of living and the tranquility of transformation.

Interaction Steps:

  • Pinch the pulse sensor with one finger.
  • Place your head inside the black "Life Box."
  • Watch the colorful LED lights in front of you breathing in sync with your detected heartbeat.
  • After detecting 40 heartbeats, the system automatically transitions into "Death Mode," where small LED lights on the sides start breathing randomly, and the mirrored surfaces on both sides reflect countless tiny lights.
  • Press the red button on the left to reset to "Life Mode" and restart the "Living" experience.
